Barrington recreation centre project proceeding
Barrington Municipal Council was expected to ratify a committee recommendation when they met on Dec. 12 to award the construction of the new recreation centre project to Rikjak Construction Limited for the base bid of $8,966,457.
The Request for Proposal (RFP) evaluation report for the construction of the new Barrington Recreation Centre was considered at council’s Committee of the Whole meeting on Dec. 5.
The municipality received two responses to the RFP for construction of the new centre. In addition to Rikjak Construction’s bid, Avondale Construction Limited also submitted a tender for $10,100,000.
“The proposals were evaluated by the architectural and engineering teams of SNMArchitect Ltd. to determine the degree to which they responded to the requirements as set out in the RFP,” states the evaluation report. The evaluation process was divided into four stages, with Rikjak coming out on top.
The proposed start date for construction of the new recreation centre is of April 15, 2024, with a completion date of April 30, 2025.
The municipality received $6 million in provincial funding on March 17 to replace the existing 55-year-old recreation center.
The municipality is exploring several options to bridge the financial variance of roughly $2,460,000 and $3,000,000 between the grant received from the provincial government and the total project cost.
The new multi-use facility will be fully integrated with the existing Sandy Wickens
Memorial Arena on Sherose Island.
The fully accessible building will feature a walking-running track, a program kitchen, a 4,000-square-foot multipurpose room, program and group activity spaces, community room/meeting space, warm spectator viewing areas and 366 parking spaces, according to the municipality’s website.
The new centre has a netzero-carbon design.
