The three municipal units in eastern Shelburne County will explore the concept of consolidating.

At the invitation of Shelburne municipal council, both the towns of Lockeport and Shelburne passed motions at their respective meetings in January that they are interested in exploring the concept of consolidation with the Municipality of the District of Shelburne.

“In recognition of our shared history and the interdependence of our daily lives, the council of the Municipality of the District of Shelburne, along with the councils of the towns of Shelburne and Lockeport, have taken a step forward and agreed to explore the concept of consolidation.

“This exploration is not a commitment to consolidation but an acknowledgment that we are examining the potential benefits while preserving our unique identities,” Shelburne Municipal Warden Penny Smith said in a public statement released on Jan. 24.

The municipality “acknowledges the potential within our district and the neighbouring towns of Shelburne and Lockeport, as we embark on an exploratory journey that seeks to foster unity.

“Our region boasts a rich tapestry of history, diverse geography, thriving businesses and vibrant community groups, all contributing to our distinct character."

She said the communities collaborate and share services such as fire protection, waste management, sewer and water systems and they attend similiar recreation and community events.

“We frequent each other's municipalities to benefit from services such as schools, libraries, grocery stores, gas stations, parks, trails, museums, and the invaluable contributions of numerous community organizations."

She said council would engage with the community at every step of the process.

"We will explore the potential advantages and challenges that consolidation could bring to our community.

“Together, we can celebrate our distinctive characters while considering the aspirations and collective voice of our residents in shaping our shared future.”
