A win­ter com­mute may not be pos­si­ble for ev­ery­one in Canada due to se­vere weather, but for those in suit­able cli­mates, out­fit­ting a cy­clocross bike with fend­ers and pan­niers and hit­ting the road even for 20 min­utes twice a day will give you an ex­tra 2:40 of rid­ing time per week. Add that to your in­ter­val train­ing and week­end work­outs and you will find that thanks to 12 or more hours per month over the win­ter, you’ll be stronger come the spring. Us­ing a cross bike with cross tires will up the strength com­po­nent of your morn­ing com­mute due to in­creased rolling re­sis­tance and will make the ride safer on win­ter roads.
