STAC Performance Virtual Wind Tunnel

We wrote about this revolutionary new system last March (TMC March & April 2017). Through a series of scans of your position, the system analyzes air flow around the rider to measure the drag they are creating. The system uses a 3D scanner to create a high-resolution image of the rider, which STAC then processes and analyzes.

Ultimately, testing like this will become an important part of any serious athlete’s armoury. Boecherer used his testing data as the deciding factor in choosing his clothing sponsor for 2018 – testing a number of suits and sticking with the one that made the most difference for him. That personal component is an important one. During some testing we did last year it was surprising to see how the same helmet could make dramatic differences for one athlete and actually slow another down based on their head position and neck flexibility. Boecherer found that suits that worked well on other athletes didn’t provide him with the same benefits.—km
