FOR CANADIAN TRIATHLETES, a wetsuit is pretty much a must-have item for early-season races, and can be a part of your race kit for events all year long depending on where you compete. The category has become crazy competitive these days, with manufacturers putting more and more features into the suits. Long gone are the days when you’d have to put up with a stiff, restrictive wetsuit that makes it difficult to maintain your normal stroke; super thin material around the shoulders, upper back and arms has become a mainstay in most suits.

Typically, you’ll be faster in a wetsuit because it will enhance your body position in the water, putting you up a bit higher. That’s what good swimmers do naturally, so they don’t get as much benefit from a wetsuit. Some models, though, have been designed with high-end swimmers in mind, so it’s worth having a look and doing your research to find out which suit will both fit you and meet your specific swim needs, all within your budget. Believe us – there is one out there.
