OVERCOMING ADVERSITY is not just Jeff Symonds’s modus operandi when competing, it’s his brand. He proudly bills himself under the moniker “Getting Ugly.” Symonds put the triathlon world on notice when he placed third at the 2011 Ironman 70.3 World Championship. He also ran a stunning 2:44 marathon en route to erasing a twelve- minute deficit to win the Ironman Asia-pacific Championship in Melbourne, Australia in 2015. His 2015 Ironman debut was a lesson in perseverance as a mechanical issue forced him to pedal with one leg for the last 30 km of the bike. He still made the most of the experience by “getting ugly” and posting the day’s third fastest run split. When he’s not getting ugly, the veteran from Penticton inspires our future generation of triathletes by coaching juniors in the Okanagan Valley.
