Catching Up With Nathan Killam
Nathan Killam is one of Canada’s most versatile professional triathletes. Not only does he compete in half and fulldistance events, he also races in the spectator-friendly Super League series. In the off-season, Killam morphs into an elite cyclocross racer.
You are a busy guy, in addition to your full-time job as a firefighter, you are a pro triathlete, coach, husband and father. How do you manage your time? NATHAN KILLAM: I’ve really been getting better at time efficiency. I’m good at making sure I’m not wasting any time. I also have a very supportive wife who helps me stay on track.
What were some of the highlights from last season? For sure it was coming third at Mont-Tremblant. It was a real breakthrough race for me. Coming in third to Cody Beals and Lionel Sanders was pretty special.
What did you learn from that race? Up until that time I really didn’t have a good Ironman race as a pro. At Mont-Tremblant, I was really able to put it all together. Even though I didn’t feel great on the day, I had a good result. I learned a lot about pacing and patience, too. I usually race with a lot of emotion, which is fine at 70.3 races, but for my race at Tremblant I told myself, it’s about the run, so just ride your watts, and it worked.
