ONE MONTH TO YOUR FIRST TRI

-

Introduction

This is the completion of the training program that was included in our March issue to help new triathletes train for their first sprint-distance triathlon. It also includes some workouts and training tips for experienced athletes who have been training toward a longer distance already, but who are doing a sprint race to kick off their season.

The turn of events during the first few months of this year that led to social distancing and the closing of gyms and pools, and the cancellation of training camps and races may have derailed the training programs for many of us. Maintaining swim fitness in the absence of a pool takes a special kind of commitment and creativity, and it will certainly be felt by many athletes when the triathlon season opens once again. We may all feel more inclined to become duathletes until the nice weather finally arrives.

With a foundation of fitness, and doing the best we can with what we have to work with, we can still achieve a strong sprint race. We may not have a personal best in the swim, but getting through the 750-m distance is doable, and a lot of time can be made up with a strong bike and run.

The option of changing to a duathlon or relay may help some athletes hold on to their goal, with some adaptation – and continue on to complete their first sprint triathlon later in the season. The good news is they tend to be plentiful and well supported. Keep on training and go after those goals.

(At the time of writing, the months leading into the summer season remain uncertain as to whether the early races will go ahead as planned. If they don’t – nothing says you can’t challenge yourself to your own personal sprint triathlon to test your fitness and skills. There may not be a shiny medal and T-shirt at the end, but your accomplishment will still be something to be proud of.)
