Ride Inside

- By Joel Friel with Jim Rutberg

If you’re a Canadian triathlete, indoor training is very much a part of your regular training routine. Even when the weather isn’t making it difficult to get outside, indoor cycling workouts provide consistent conditions and are extremely efficient. Training indoors also means you can avoid having to contend with drivers — safely encased in a few tons of metal — hurtling down the road; they can often be too close for comfort.

As we learn in the foreword to Ride Inside: “Technological advances in indoor cycling have elevated a frankly secondrate training alternative to an essential tool that can offer significant advantages over training outdoors. These days, riding inside isn’t what you do when the weather is too miserable to ride outside; its what you do when you want a great workout.”

As much time as Canadian triathletes spend on their indoor trainers throughout the year, many have never tapped the full potential of their trainers or programs. Thanks to Joe Friel, the author of The Triathlete’s Training Bible, and Jim Rutberg, co-author of The Time Crunched Triathlete, that doesn’t have to be the case any longer.

Ride Inside offers lots of insight on how to best set up a trainer or smart trainer, how to modify your outdoor workouts once you’re forced inside, how to figure out the best power levels to get the most out of your training, and how to best utilize training platforms like Zwift.

Friel and Rutberg’s concise, clear writing style makes this an easy book to either read straight through or use as a reference as you need it. Through the insightful tips and explanations on everything from motivation, the changes in your technique and position while riding a trainer, to dealing with the different leg tension and eccentric loading from flywheel momentum, you’ll gather the information you need to get the most out of your indoor training. It’ll even help with e-racing – if that’s something you’re looking to explore.

Most triathletes are always looking to get the most out of their training time, and Ride Inside will help you do just that by ensuring you’ll be both efficient and smart with that valuable time.
