Beau’s Brewery layoffs rumour false

- GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

There is no truth to a rumour that Beau’s All Natural Brewery is looking at layoffs at the start of the new year.

The rumour seems to have more foam than flavor to it. Company co-founder Steve Beauchesne dismissed the idea during a phone interview Jan. 9.“There is no truth that we’re going to be doing layoffs,” he said.

The Vankleek Hill-based craft brewer went on a hiring spree in 2017, with 60 new employees brought on board. Beauchesne noted that 16 of those new hires were let go later in the year as the expected big boom in market growth for Beau’s did not work as anticipated.

Instead of a 25 per cent growth in the company’s craft beer market share, Beau’s saw 15 per cent growth. It was still good enough for the company to maintain 44 of the new staff hired last year. Beau’s finished 2017 with a total staff number of 172, including management and front-line workers. “That is up significantly,” Beauchesne said.

Looking ahead to 2018 operation, Beauchesne said the company should still enjoy from seven to 10 per cent growth in its share of the craft beer market. He noted that the craft beer market is starting to stabilize now so the company’s focus during 2018 will be on improving its operation efficiency.
