ULTIMATE FRISBEE TOURNAMENT AT VANKLEEK HILL INSTITUTE
Ultimate Frisbee players took to the air at Vankleek Hill Collegiate (VCI) on May 23, when the school hosted its annual inter-school championship tournament.
The all-day event saw the senior team from l’École secondaire publique Le Sommet beat l’École secondaire catholique L’Escale #2 in overtime. L’Escale fielded four teams in total; two juniors and two seniors. On the junior side, the two teams from L’Escale went head to head and L’Escale #2 got the better of their schoolmates.
The fourth tournament in as many years occupied both playing fields at the school. The date was set for May 23 so that it did not conflict with the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Amateur Athletics track-and-field championships.
“Many players on regional school Ultimate Frisbee teams are also involved in school track competition,” explained Daniel Tremblay, the organiser of the tournament.
“We usually get between six to eight schools from the united counties competing,” said the extracurricular sports coordinator and Ultimate Frisbee coach, who introduced the sports to his own students when he joined the staff at VCI. Teams from Casselman, Hawkesbury, Rockland, Russell and Vankleek Hill participated in this year’s tourney.
Tremblay hopes to see the VCI Ultimate Frisbee Tournament enjoy expansion in the future. “At present the tournament sees participation from various schools in the Prescott-Russell region,” he said. “I have sent inquiries to schools in the StormontDundas-Glengarry region about fielding teams to the VCI event next year.”
