Por­tapique man ned more than $700 for dis­tress­ing birds

TRURO, N.S. — A Por­tapique man has been con­victed of caus­ing distress to doves and chick­ens through star­va­tion and de­hy­dra­tion.

Pa­trick Kayser, 42, was charged un­der the An­i­mal Pro­tec­tion Act with caus­ing distress to four doves and nine chick­ens be­tween Dec. 1–22, 2016. He was ned $716.48 dur­ing a hear­ing Tues­day in pro­vin­cial court in Truro.

Court heard that the doves and chick­ens had likely not been fed for seven days and their wa­ter dis­penser was frozen solid when in­spected by au­thor­i­ties.

Three re­lated charges were dis­missed by the Crown.
