Geo Stewart will serve as deputy mayor

Geo Stewart, the Brookfield­area (District 3) representa­tive on Colchester County Council will serve as deputy mayor for the remainder of the current municipal term.

He replaces Bill Masters of Lower Truro (District 2) who has served as deputy mayor since Oct. 25, 2012.

The term of deputy mayor expires after the second anniversar­y of a municipal election, which last occurred in Nova Scotia in October 2016 but the incumbent councillor is permitted to let their name stand for another nomination.

The deputy mayor acts as chairperso­n during Council Committee of the Whole meetings while the mayor sits as chairperso­n during the regular monthly council session. e deputy mayor also chairs all council meetings in the absence of a sitting mayor.

Councillor Eric Boutilier of Bible Hill (District 1) will serve as the alternate chair of Council Committee for the remainder of the current council term. He replaces Coun. Mike Cooper (District 4) who has served in that position since Oct. 30, 2008.

e next municipal election is scheduled for Oct. 17, 2020.
