- BY FRAM DINSHAW

Hollis Ford on Robie Street is donating $10,000 to the Canadian Cancer Society.

e dealership presented its cheque to the society Oct. 19 after raising funds through both vehicle sales and work orders over the last 18 months.

“We’ve all known somebody as well that has been touched by cancer, whether it be a relative or friend or an associate, and we feel as if our decision to go with the donation campaign to the Canadian Cancer Society is a very worthy one,” said Rick Hollis, dealer principal at Hollis Ford.

He said Hollis Ford picked the Canadian Cancer Society as funds are kept in Atlantic Canada. Funds raised will go towards both research and awareness campaigns.

e dealership has employees who are cancer survivors, and Hollis said his company is prepared to support any employee living with cancer or other major illnesses.

“We’d support them nancially. We’d support them with any kind of provision they may need that they can’t do on their own. It’s a family here,” said Hollis. “We work as a team and it’s a good family of people, very long-term employees.

Gillian Zinck, senior manager of revenue development at the Canadian Cancer Society, said she was pleased by what she de- scribed as “an outpouring” of support at Hollis Ford.

“We’re very lucky to have a lot of community support, but it was so great to see everybody out today,” said Zinck.

e society’s goal is to bring about healthy public policies such as smoke-free outdoor areas, as well as funding cancer research for new therapies, and raising awareness with the public.

e group also promotes healthy living to prevent cancer, while advocating for existing patients who are prescribed expensive take- home drugs.

Its national priorities also include tobacco control, ending the use of asbestos in buildings, combatting drug shortages, warning about the dangers of indoor tanning beds and improving palliative care.
