TAAC revitalization project gets municipal backing
A revitalization project planned for the TAAC grounds in Truro has received financial commitments from both the Municipality of Colchester and the Town of Truro.
The municipalities have each agreed to contribute $ 310,000 – $ 620,000 total – to the three- year, $ 6- million fundraising effort.
They have also each agreed to sign promissory notes for $1.62 million, with $1 million of that commitment to come from the private sector.
“Council has agreed to do that up to $310,000,” said Colchester Mayor Christine Blair. “But also with the understanding that the Town of Truro will be covering the operating expenses…”
Those municipal commitments are required for the project to apply for $4.38 million in federal/ provincial funding through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program.
“In order to access almost $4.4 million, the council felt that that was a good investment for the entire community,” Blair said.
The revitalization project involves a new baseball field to be built on Argus Drive and a conversion of the current TAAC grounds into an all- weather, multi- sport turf field for football, soccer, rugby, and lacrosse.
An eight-lane synthetic track will surround the field.
Brian Wood, president of the TAAC Revitalization Society said in a letter to Colchester Council that the municipal contributions could possibly be reduced through private fundraising efforts, a reduction of project costs through in-kind contributions and any contribution forthcoming from Millbrook First Nations.
