CEC girls capture junior varsity provincial crown
e Cobequid Cougars junior varsity girls volleyball team won the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation title last weekend.
The Cougars defeated the Lockview Dragons in straight sets (25-15, 25-10) in the nal.
Cobequid went undefeated and posted round- robin wins over Lockview ( 25- 16, 25- 23), Digby ( 25- 6, 25- 13) and Riverview (25-11, 25-9) to nish rst in its pool.
In the semi nal, the Cougars downed the Citadel Phoenix (2516, 15-12) to advance to advance to the championship match. Citadel captured bronze with a 25-19, 25-15 win over Parkview.
It was the second straight provincial title for the Cougars, who won in 2017 in Digby.
e team is coached by Carrie Peck and Hilary Cormier, while Ally Fanning, a former CEC setter, is an assistant coach with the team and also serves as trainer.
Sydney Davidson led the JV Cougars’ attack with 29 kills followed by Molly Marquis with 17 and Marlee Mcquillan and Paige Crosby with 15 each. Abbie Archibald was the top server with 19 aces and 47 successful serves. Mcquillan had 16 aces and 39 successful serves, while Abbie Langille had 13 aces and 36 successful serves.
Marquis led the team in servereceive with 14 perfect passes, while Sarah Garrett had 12 perfect passes. Garrett was also the top defender with 17 spike digs followed by Marquis with 10 spike digs and three tip digs. Mc- Quillan led the team in blocking with 23 blocks.
Returning from an ankle injury and playing for the rst time in the past six weeks, Alex Marshall had 11 blocks. Archibald had an outstanding performance as the CEC setter, running a varied and balanced attack.
is weekend the Varsity Cougars travel to Bridgewater for the NSSAF Division 1 championship, hosted by the Parkview Panthers. CEC will enter the tournament as the top seed, having won seven of the eight tournaments they entered this season and los- ing only one match all year.
