Sex­ton scores OT win­ner to lift Bearcats over Rapids

Kyle Sex­ton scored the ga­me­ty­ing goal and net­ted the win­ner in over­time as the Truro Bearcats edged the Grand Falls Rapids 4- 3 in over­time on Sun­day in the Mar­itime Ju­nior Hockey League.

The vic­tory came af­ter a 6-0 de­feat at the hands of the Ed­mund­ston Bl­iz­zard on Sat­ur­day.

On Sun­day, Sex­ton net­ted the equal­izer at 9:46 of the third pe­riod and notched the win­ner at 2:10 of over­time. Shaun Bily and Car­son Lanceleve also scored for the Bearcats, who im­proved to 13-7-1-1.

Grand Falls led 3-1 af­ter 40 min­utes, be­fore Bily cut the deficit to one at 9:31 of the fi­nal frame. Sex­ton tied it 15 sec­onds later to send it to ex­tra time.

Myles Hek­tor, who re­placed Alec Macdon­ald early in the sec­ond pe­riod, was the win­ning goal­tender, stop­ping 25 shots.

Truro sits in third place in the Eastlink South Di­vi­sion, two points be­hind sec­ond-place Amherst and 11 back of the league­lead­ing Yar­mouth Mariners.

On Sat­ur­day, Ed­mund­ston goal­tender Fran­cis As­selin stopped all 33 shots the Bearcats threw his way in the win. Dal­las Mau­rovic pot­ted two and Lo­gan John­ston had three as­sists for the win­ners. Hec­tor made 27 saves.

On Thurs­day, Nov. 22, the Bearcats lost 4-1 to the Pic­tou County Crush­ers. Gavin Hart had the lone Truro goal.

The Bearcats re­turn to ac­tion Sat­ur­day when they visit the Val­ley Wild­cats. On Sun­day, Truro hosts Mi­ramichi for a 2 p.m. puck drop at the RECC.
