Local food, farmers being celebrated during weekend event
Workshops, seed selling part of Seedy Saturday festivities
TRURO – A celebration of local food takes place this weekend as the sixth annual Seedy Saturday returns to Truro.
The event, which takes place Saturday from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. at St. Andrew’s United Church, has a theme of celebrating local food, farming and gardening.
Truro’s Brenda Leenders, one of the people overseeing some of the events, said the gathering is important to the community for many reasons.
“The goal is of coming together, to support local farmers and growers, to explore how to be a part of local foods ( and) learn how to get the best out of our community. We have to recognize that we have lots of expertise locally,” said Leenders.
Some of the highlights will include family interactive activities such as making transplant containers out of newspaper, preschool garden kits and sharing local food- based books.
In addition, numerous vendors will be in attendance, seeds will be sold and traded, recycled coffee market bags will be available, and free workshops will include learning to save seeds from your own plants, extending your growing season, seed- starting, and the wonderful world of sprouting.
Leenders said the public will also be given the opportunity to register for seasonal workshops on local foods with Gail Keddy.
Information will also be shared on a community garden at the John Calvin Reformed Church on Glenwood Drive and related cooking classes.
Leenders said hundreds attended Seedy Saturday last year and she anticipates another successful event this weekend.
“There are lots of people who are just starting to explore,” this type of event and their own food production, said Leenders, “especially with food prices going up.”
The event is free and is open to everyone.
