Antigonish Abattoir announces May closure of slaughter operations
ANTIGONISH – A meat processing facility in northeastern Nova Scotia says it will close its slaughter operations in May.
In a statement released Thursday, officials with Antigonish Abattoir say they will discontinue all slaughter operations as of May 31.
The company says the slaughter facility is nearing the end of its operational life and would require significant upgrades to meet certification standards.
They company also says it hasn’t been able to generate a profit in current market conditions.
Nine people will be affected by the closure and officials say some will be transferred to other departments.
The company says only its slaughter operations are affected.
