NDP Candidate says campaign was too long

- BY LYNN CURWIN

Wendy Robinson is happy with the way her campaign was run, but feels there were times when others could have gotten their message across in a more respectful manner.

“The acrimony was unprofessional, disrespectful and dis-appointing,” said the NDP candidate. “It reinforces the stereotypes of candidates and political parties that make some people not want to be bothered with elections.

“Members of the audience sometimes got caught up in things and acted inappropriately, too.”

She said unprofessional behaviour at events is disrespectful to the organizers.

Robinson feels the campaign period was too long, resulting in some problems.

“It was hard to maintain voter interest and it was hard on volunteers,” she said. “This is a big riding, so the long campaign was good in that it gave me an opportunity to meet more people.”

She said it was exciting to be involved with the process during such an historical election.

Robinson has been a Stewiacke councillor for several years and served as mayor since 2012. She spent the day of the election working at her full time job at a dental practice, joining some of her supporters at campaign headquarters in the evening to watch election results.

“The results are disappointing but I put a lot of hard work into it and don’t take it personally,” she added. “There are always more things you wish you could have done but with the amount of money and the number of volunteers we had I feel we did our best, with integrity.”
