Police looking for garbage bin arsonists

- By Barb McKenna GREENFIELD, QUEENS CO.

Residents in Greenfield, Queens County are concerned after a series of fires had been deliberately set during the past two weeks.

Since mid-July, there have been six suspicious fires where green bins, and in some cases, garbage bins have been destroyed by intentionally set fires.

Residents of the community are concerned about damage that has been caused, and worry these fires may lead to homes and wooded areas being burnt as well.

“It’s scary as hell,” says area resident Rebecca Chandler.

Queens Region Coun. Raymond Fiske represents the area and says residents are very upset.

He says the last fire was on the Narrows Road on Thursday, and burned four boxes and two composters. The area was so isolated it wasn’t reported until 6:30 a.m., and by then the fire had burned out by itself.

“It’s a wooded area you know; it’s cottage country, and private-owned homes in the area. It’s very serious because a person going around lighting compost carts and grey boxes and creating large fires, if the winds right it would be very, very serious in the area. It doesn’t make any sense at all.”

Queens District RCMP is asking is asking anyone who has information about these fires to contact them at 902-3545721 or 1-800-803-RCMP (7267). Should you wish to remain anonymous, citizens can also call Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), text TIP202 + your message to ‘CRIMES’ (274637) or by secure online tips at www.crimestoppers.ns.ca.
