Masstown corn maze salutes first responders, helps fight world hunger
Can you find the messages in the corn maze?
Captain Cob’s Corn Maze has opened for the season and has both a message in the maze design and on signs hidden throughout.
From above, a ‘THANK YOU,’ along with an image of a fire truck and fire brigade symbol can be seen, to show appreciation for firefighters and all first responders.
Hidden among the plants are signs bearing messages about ending hunger. Visitors can try to find each sign and mark it on a map they are given when they enter the maze.
“The corn is about two and a half feet tall right now so it’s perfect for the younger ones,” said Ron Smith, manager of business development for the Old Fletcher Farm property, a division of Masstown Market. “It’s been growing fast. Corn loves hot and humid weather.”
This is the fifth year farmers have planted corn on the 10-acre field to help the Canadian Foodgrains Bank fight world hunger. Farmers will harvest and truck the corn in the fall, and money raised through its sale will help fight hunger. A portion of the proceeds from entry fees also goes to the Foodgrains Bank.
A Harvest for Hunger Picnic will be held at the maze on Aug. 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and anyone interested in helping
with that event is asked to contact Ian MacHattie at 902893-4197 or email bleenders@ foodgrainsbank.ca .
Captain Cob’s Corn Maze will be open daily from 10:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and can be contacted at 902-662-2477.
