Students receive Apex scholarshi­ps

Jordan, Maxwell win top golf divisions at 43rd annual event

Eight African Nova Scotian students pursuing post-secondary education across Canada were recipients of recent Apex scholarshi­ps.

The scholarshi­ps were handed out during the closing banquet for the 43rd Apex Invitation­al golf tournament in Truro.

This year’s recipients include: Adele Beals (Dalhousie), Greg Collins (Holland College), Tyren Desmond (Saint Mary’s), Makiaya Ford (Western University), Patrick Jackson (Dalhousie AC), Haley Matthews (Dalhousie), Nikita Morris (Toronto Film School) and Keenan Sparks (Dalhousie).

Shakara Paris and Jessica Maxwell, 2011 Apex scholarshi­p recipients, attended the banquet and spoke on the importance of the funding and how it helped them during their university years. Paris (St. Francis Xavier) and Maxwell (Acadia) graduated last year and are now working in their individual fields.

Golf winners

Trevor Jordan won the men’s division title for the 11th time and first time in eight years. He carded a 36-hole score 151 (7576) for a one-stroke victory over last year’s winner, Alie Maxwell.

Heather Maxwell won the women’s division, while Tina Skier and Harold Thompson won nine-hole titles.

Darrell Maxwell was the lowscoring senior for the tournament and received the No. 2 Constructi­on Battalion Trophy. George Borden, a retired Captain of the Canadian Forces and a representa­tive of the Black Battalion Centennial Committee, was on hand to make the trophy presentati­on.

On the diamond

The Young Guns were too much for the Oldtimers at the Charles (Snooky) Tynes memorial softball game.

The Young Guns cruised to a 9-1 victory over their more experience­d counterpar­ts.

Sing it loud

Karaoke at the Engine Room raised $1,217 for Scholarshi­p Fund.

The event, in its 16th year, is organized by Jamie Paris, in honour of his late mother, Kimber Lee Paris.

Money was raised through 50/50 sales and cover charge to the karaoke. the Apex Trevor Jordan won his 11th Apex Invitation­al men’s golf title. Jordan carded rounds of 75-76 for a onestroke victory.
