Truro’s Sondra Borden has announced her intentions to seek the PC nomination in the riding of TruroBible Hill-Millbrook-Salmon River.

And then there were two. A second local resident has announced her intention to seek the Progressive Conservative nomination in the Truro-Bible Hill-Millbrook-Salmon River riding.

Sondra Borden, 31, said she is making a bid for the PC nomination because she believes the Truro area is a community of “remarkable, entrepreneurial people filled with talent and potential.”

With a “conservative minded, progressive plan,” Borden said she believes the town and region “can grow again and thrive economically, eliminating the need to migrate westward for employment.”

“Truro and Nova Scotia is a beautiful, wonderful place to live,” she said, adding she does not believe enough is being done to take advantage of all the area has to offer.

“It doesn’t seem like the current government is moving us in a forward direction.”

Borden holds a bachelor of science in management and accounting from Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland, which she attended on an athletic scholarship. While at Coppin, she served as captain of the track and field team, earning Academic All-Conference honours three times while also making the Dean’s List. Borden has also served on several committees such as The Student Activities Board, The Student-Athlete Advisory Council and The Royal Council.

She has also volunteered much of her time coaching youth track and field locally for the Central Nova Legion Legends track club and throughout the Atlantic provinces.

In 2008 she was named Coach of the Year by the Truro Sports Heritage Society for her service as a provincial coach for the Nova Scotia/Nunavut Legion Command at the Legion Youth National Championships and she has also coached for Athletics New Brunswick at a Youth Development Camp during the 2010 IAAF World U20 Championships.

In addition to coaching, Borden has served as the athlete’s representative to the Athletics Nova Scotia board of directors and then later sat as member of the board of the Nova Scotia/Nunavut Legion Command Team.

Keltie Jones, who came close to unseating Truro Mayor Bill Mills in the last two municipal elections, had previously announced her candidacy for the PC nomination.

The PC nomination vote will be held March 1 at the Truro Fire Hall. To vote you must have a current PC Party membership prior to 5 p.m. on Feb. 15.
