Cultural centre seeking more widespread funding
The Marigold Cultural Centre is requesting annual funding from the Municipality of Colchester County.
“We’re serving the community in the county as much or more as in the town,” said Farida Gabbani, managing director at the Marigold.
Based on postal codes collected during attended past events at the cultural centre, Gabbani said 60 per cent of the Marigold’s patrons come from Colchester County as opposed to the town of Truro.
Gabbani and Vern Hearn, chairman of the Cobequid Arts Council (CAC), recently made a presentation to Colchester council requesting consideration for $25,000 in annual funding.
“We are requesting Annual Funding so that we can engage in long-term planning and secure our place in the community; where we can provide arts and culture opportunities and a welcoming space for community to engage in and participate in arts and culture,” a letter to council reads.
“We ask that Council will recognize the benefits the CAC/Marigold bring to the residents and businesses in Colchester County and we would appreciate the opportunity to continue supporting the County of Colchester in meeting its Arts and Culture, Heritage and Volunteerism as per “Sustainable Colchester 2029” goals.”
Last year, the municipality provided a one-time grant of $25,000, which was the first operational funding provided by the county during the Marigold’s 10-year history.
Gabbani said that funding helped to purchase and install LED lighting, which enabled the centre to promote itself to more community groups, which provides a reduced rate for non-profit groups wishing to rent the facilities.
The Town of Truro provides annual funding of $75,000 along with a $28,000 tax exemption.
