Two students are making a good thing even better
Two graduating high school students will be selling organic vegetables in Shortts Lake for the second summer in a row – but this year it will operate as a U-pick.
Last summer Ceilidh Mckenney and December Sampson delivered the vegetables from their 70-ft. by 50-ft. garden to 30 customers around Shortts Lake.
“It was a challenge,” said McKenney. “It was all new to us but we Googled what we didn’t know and we worked hard.”
The students from Cobequid Educational Centre planted and sold carrots, peas, beans, turnip, Swiss chard, potatoes and more.
is year, instead of delivering, the students will set up a stand at the bottom of the driveway to 1122 Shortts Lake West Rd. and they will also allow customers to pick their own.
“That way they get exactly what they want and they can experience the atmosphere of the farm, they can spend a day out here and enjoy the country,” said Sampson.
e girls have started a survey poll on their Facebook page to nd out just what vegetable customers are interested in.
The choices include: beans (yellow, purple and green), beets (as well as beet greens), carrots, corn, kale, lettuce, onions, peas, peppers (sweet bells and hot), potatoes, spinach, Swiss chard, tomatoes, turnip.
The students also have free range beef and chicken for sale.
In the fall, customers can buy apples from the U-pick orchard.
On their Facebook page the girls also share their hours, what’s ready for harvest and also recipes for various vegetables.
Both girls’ parents are doctors and both intend to study medicine themselves next year.
