Cougars enjoy great success at NSSAF championsh­ips

The Cobequid Cougars dominated track and field events and swept their way to NSSAF titles.

The Cobequid Cougars ruled the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation track and field championsh­ip over the weekend.

For the first time in 25 years, the Cougars swept all banners at the two-day event held at Beazley Field in Dartmouth.

The Cougars won intermedia­te and senior girls, boys and combined banners and were crowned overall Division 1 champions.

Many CEC athletes turned in personal-best performanc­es, while Michael Adams set a new provincial record in the intermedia­te boys javelin with a throw of 51.86m.

In the 4x100m intermedia­te boys relay, the CEC team of Kamryn Matheson, Cameron Degroot, Brody Schmidt and Zach Richards set a new school record with a gold-medal time of 45.98.

Matheson also set a new school mark in the intermedia­te boys 200m with a silver-medal time of 23.16.

Both CEC senior 4x400m relay teams earned gold. On the girls’ side, the team of Kara MacDonald, Lexi Sellers, Lindsey Burgess and Marissa MacAulay won their event, while the boys’ team of Dean Berry, Emmett Fitzgerald, Jack Tyler and Tyler Ball was also crowned provincial champions.

Hannah Lynds and Chelsea MacIsaac finished 1-2 in the intermedia­te girls shot-put. Other gold-medal efforts by CEC athletes included Chelsea MacIsaac (intermedai­te girls discus); Maddie Quinn (senior girls javelin); Robert Grant (senior boys shout-put); Byron Wood (senior boys javelin) and Rachel Yorke (special shot-put and 200m).
