Atlantic Rock claims bronze medal, downing Quebec
Kelton Dawe and his teammates were all smiles after the Atlantic Rock defeated Quebec to take bronze at the national U-19 rugby championship.
The Atlantic Rock claimed the bronze at the Canadian under-19 men’s rugby championship held this week in North River.
In a spirited match, the Rock defeated Quebec Voyageurs 30-22 to claim the bronze, after leading 15-8 at the half.
The gold medal was taken British Columbia as they defeated Ontario Blues 29-17.
The Rock got out to an early lead against Quebec, after a successful penalty kick by Campbell Clarke and a try with a pointafter kick on the mark put them up 10-0.
Quebec got a penalty kick of their own to make it 10-3 but the Rock scored another try with a miss on the conversion to lead 15-3.
On the next series of play though, Quebec had a try, leaving it 15-8 at halftime.
Early in the second half, Quebec drove down for another try with a successful point-after kick tying the teams at 15.
The Rock scored again on a gritty drive to lead 22-15 and added a penalty kick by Clarke making it 25-15.
Quebec broke one open to score a try and make it 25-22 but another try by the Rock made the final 30-22.
Nick Davidson, Jack McCarthy and Dylon Montgomerie each had a try for the Rock, while Campbell Clarke was successful on two conversion and two penalty kicks. The scorer of the other try wasn’t available.
For the Voyageurs, Graint Baird, Justin Davies and Elias Hancock all had tries and Stan Biazkowski chipped in with two conversions and Alex Hoerdt added a penalty kick.
Scoring statistics for the gold medal game were unavailable.
In the relegation round, Alberta Wolf Pack thumped Prairie Blizzard 43-12 in the six-team competition.
