Former Onslow-area councillor declares intention to run in byelection

A former Colchester County councillor is hoping to reclaim his seat in an upcoming byelection.

Bob White, District 9 councillor from 2004 to 2012, says he plans to run in the byelection to replace Doug MacInnes, who recently resigned.

“I believe that strong voices are needed in our community and I feel I served the community great for the eight years I was there,” White, 48, said of his reason for wanting to return to municipal politics.

“I miss getting out to a lot of community events and I miss the staff. Colchester County has a very strong and dedicated staff who do a fantastic job and I miss being around that camaraderie.”

White has been married for 23 years to Lori Ann and has a son Connor, 17.

He has owned his business Wildflower Promotional Products for eight years after working with the company for the previous 10 years.

And being his own boss means he can be easily available to deal with constituent concerns, he said.

“If somebody needs to talk then I have the flexibility to come and go as I please.”

White lost his council seat to MacInnes in the 2012 election by a margin of 174 votes.

Should he be re-elected, White said he would like to continue to

expand on the growth in the central Onslow and Debert areas.

“Colchester County’s been a financially strong county because of good management by staff and because of good decisions by council and the mayor,” White said.

Council is planning to set a date for the byelection at its Aug. 17 committee meeting.

So far, White is the only person to have publicly declared an interest in running.

Between now and the completion of a byelection, citizens residing or operating businesses within the boundaries of District 9 will be served by the mayor, a councillor from any other district or by municipal staff.

District 9 includes the areas of East Folly Mountain, Debert, Lower Onslow, Central Onslow, Crowes Mills, Belmont, and Moose River.
