Bearcats defeated

Despite loss, Truro makes up ground as Wildcats drop two

-

Despite losing a game to Halifax, Truro got some good news — two Kentville losses.

The Truro Bearcats dug themselves a hole in the first inning they couldn’t get out of, and went on to drop a 13-4 decision to the visiting Halifax Pelham Molson Canadians Friday in Nova Scotia Senior Baseball League action.

The Bearcats gave up four runs in the first and despite closing the gap in the sixth, couldn’t catch the Canadians.

There was some good news, though. The first-place Sydney Sooners (16-4) swept a pair of games on the weekend against the Kentville Wildcats by scores of 4-3 and 11-1. That means Truro (5-16) is technically half a game ahead of the Wildcats (5-17) in the standings as the teams battle for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Halifax’s Jake Pelham hit a solo home run Friday off Jordan Johnson who came on in relief of Jamie MacLean, making it 5-1 after two. Halifax scored again in the fourth, with Truro plating three runs in the sixth to make it 6-4 but that was as close as it got. Halifax scored four runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to come away with the victory at the TAAC Grounds.

Jordan Pelham took the win on the mound for the Canadians, while MacLean was saddled with the loss.

At the plate, Jake Pelham had three singles and drove in three runs, to go with his round-tripper.

For the Bearcats, Jason Smith belted a double and a single and had an RBI. John Chapman and Shawn Mullins had two singles apiece and Jeff Chisholm had a single and an RBI.

Halifax out-hit the Bearcats

13-9.

Tonight (Tuesday) the Bearcats host the Dartmouth Moosehead Dry for a 7:30 p.m. contest at the TAAC Grounds while Kentville is in Halifax to take on the Canadians, also at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, the Bearcats are home again to the Canadians with opening pitch at 7:30 p.m.
