Be thankful for the care we get

-

To the editor:

With all the negative stories receiving so much attention these days – terrorists, sexual assaults, protests, environmental disasters, gas prices, tax rules for doctors, etc. – it is little wonder there is not much room for good news.

It might be nice to go back to the days when Gabriel Heatter started the national news at night with, “Aah there’s good news tonight!”

I feel it is time for a bit of good news on the home front in regard to our health care system.

I have had many occasions, since late in 2016 to have need of services provided by our local hospital, Colchester East Hants Health Centre, in particular the emergency department and medical day unit.

I cannot say enough good things about the care and attention given by the doctors and staff who labour under very difficult circumstances to treat such a variety of health issues. I have been to emergency at least six times and MDU more than 50 times, along with monthly visits to blood collection and several to day surgery.

None of my problems have been life threatening but did need the care and attention that only a facility such as ours can provide. The professional, considerate, personal and friendly attitude of all doctors and staff is second to none – two thumbs up to all.

I especially want to acknowledge the folks in Medical Day Unit. They make everyone feel like family and that you are so special. Not to be left out is the service provided by ambulance and paramedics through Emergency Health Services, who were quick to respond in my recent accident and get me to the hospital as quickly and easily as possible. And thanks to the first responder from North River Fire Brigade who just happened to be passing by.

There has been a recent suggestion we need to increase taxes to help pay for health care. Perhaps more thought as to how we spend the dollars we have might also be a good idea.

It is often said our system is the envy of many other counties, which no doubt is true. The next time you pay HST don’t complain, be thankful.
