SIRT investigating after man falls to his death from overpass

The province’s independent Serious Incident Response Team is now reporting that a man fell to his death from a Highway 125 overpass on Thursday evening.
Their ongoing investigation is now regarding the circumstances that lead to the death of the 27-year-old.
“At approximately 5 p.m., Cape Breton Regional Police were called to respond to a possible altercation on the overpass over Highway 125 at the end of Upper Prince Street in Sydney, according to a SIRT update issued Friday morning.
“A member of the Cape Breton Regional Police responded to the call and encountered two men on the overpass,” the update reads.
“After the arrival of the officer, a 27-year-old male fell from the overpass. He was found deceased on Highway 125.”
As a result of the incident police contacted SIRT who sent three investigators to Sydney Thursday evening.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.
The team can independently begin an investigation after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the minister of justice.
It can also investigate after a complaint from the public.
The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizing the result of the investigation within three months after it is finished.
