SIRT investigat­ing after man falls to his death from overpass

The province’s independen­t Serious Incident Response Team is now reporting that a man fell to his death from a Highway 125 overpass on Thursday evening.

Their ongoing investigat­ion is now regarding the circumstan­ces that lead to the death of the 27-year-old.

“At approximat­ely 5 p.m., Cape Breton Regional Police were called to respond to a possible altercatio­n on the overpass over Highway 125 at the end of Upper Prince Street in Sydney, according to a SIRT update issued Friday morning.

“A member of the Cape Breton Regional Police responded to the call and encountere­d two men on the overpass,” the update reads.

“After the arrival of the officer, a 27-year-old male fell from the overpass. He was found deceased on Highway 125.”

As a result of the incident police contacted SIRT who sent three investigat­ors to Sydney Thursday evening.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact SIRT toll free at 1-855450-2010.

SIRT is responsibl­e for investigat­ing all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigat­ions are under the direction and control of independen­t civilian director Ron MacDonald.

The team can independen­tly begin an investigat­ion after a referral from a chief of police, the head of the RCMP in Nova Scotia or the minister of justice.

It can also investigat­e after a complaint from the public.

The Police Act requires the director to file a public report summarizin­g the result of the investigat­ion within three months after it is finished.
