Wolfville fire forces families out, cause unknown

- By STUART PEDDLE

An early-morning fire in a twounit apartment building in Wolfville has displaced two families from their homes.

Canadian Red Cross volunteers have arranged emergency lodging, clothing, food, personalcare items and other support for four adults and four children — a family of five and another of three.

Kevin White, deputy chief of the Wolfville Volunteer Fire Department, said they got the call at about 4:30 on Sunday morning.

He said when they arrived on the scene at 39 Willow Ave., there was a lot of smoke and the fire was visible from the back side of the house.

“The fire was knocked down pretty quickly but there was extensive damage done to the kitchen area and there was a lot of overhaul trying to check there was no extension with the fire,” White said.

The firefighters had to kill power to the whole building and the lower unit suffered “a little bit of water damage.”

White said in addition to the Wolfville crew, there was a pumper from Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department on the scene and the Hantsport department was standing by.

It was too early to say what caused the fire as of mid-morning on Sunday.

“Unfortunately there was a lot of damage done,” White said. “I don’t know if it’s salvageable or not. I’d assume it is. It was more of a room and contents fire. But they’re going to be out of the house for quite some time.”
