Cougars run record to 9-0

Weekend wins posted against Nighthawks, Vikings

The Cobequid Educationa­l Centre Cougars continued their winning ways in high school baseball play, sweeping three games over the weekend.

Friday, the Cougars defeated Northumber­land Nighthawks 9-6, while Saturday they took both ends of a doublehead­er with Amherst Regional Vikings, 12-2 and 14-0.

The Cougars record now stands at 9-0 for the season. The team begins NSSAF district playoffs on Wednesday hosting Hants East Tigers and the Hants North Flames, with the top two teams moving on to the Northumber­land Regional Playoffs Oct. 6 and 7.

In Friday’s contest the Cougars scored twice in the first inning but gave up the lead as the Nighthawks scored once in the second and five times in the third to go ahead 6-2.

CEC scored three times in their half of the third and added a pair of runs in each of the fifth and sixth inning for the margin of victory. The Cougars out-hit the Nighthawks 9-7

Chad Mingo earned the win on the mound with Jackson Haight picking up the save. Lucas Watson and Luke Creelman also handled some of the pitching duties.

Michael Jollimore and Connor Angers each had a single and a double for CEC, while Connor Irwin doubled, and Luke Smith and Mackie Marquis chipped in with two singles apiece.

CEC 12 Amherst 2 Irwin took the win on the mound for CEC in the opener of Saturday’s double-header, sharing pitching duties with Quin Cashen.

Dawson Briggs belted a threerun homer and added a single for the Cougars. Mingo singled and doubled, Watson doubled and Smith contribute­d two singles.

CEC 14 Amherst 0 Haight led the way at the plate with a three-run homer and a single; Angers had a single and a double, while Will MacGillivr­ay, Irwin and Smith each had singles and Cashen added a double.
