Variety at the Marigold

October lineup includes comedians, plays and musical performanc­es

A month of music and comedy will have Truro residents dancing, laughing and quoting Shakespear­e during October.

e Marigold Cultural Centre is bringing six new acts to the theatre for October, including musical duos, comedians and a unique theatrical performanc­e.

Kicking o the month are performanc­es by Garnet Rogers and Susan Crowe.

Rogers, a singer-songwriter from Hamilton, Ont., started his career performing with his brother Stan Rogers, whose passing pushed him to continue his solo career.

Rogers’s style di ers from his brother’s, blending a more modern folk style with rock, blues and country.

Susan Crowe is also a folksinger, and was named the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards English songwriter.

Hailing from Halifax, Crowe began writing music at age 11, and her music has earned her two Juno nomination­s and nomination­s from both the West Coast and East Coast Music Awards.

Rogers and Crowe take the stage Friday, Oct. 6, at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $30.

e following week has a weekend full of performanc­es, starting

with the Spinney Brothers.

Performing for 25 years, the Spinney Brothers have performed in every province across the country, and their bluegrass music has earned them numerous awards and nomination­s for three IBMA awards.

e Spinney Brothers will perform at 7:30 p.m. on ursday, Oct. 12, and tickets are $35.

On Friday and Saturday that week, there will be a dual performanc­e

of ‘Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet),’ a modern, comedic play that tackles Shakespear­ian themes.

Written by Ann-Marie MacDonald, the play sees a quirky Shakespear­ian scholar magically teleported into two of Shakespear­e’s most famous tragedies.

Performanc­es will be held both Friday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 14, at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for each show.

Joe Murphy & The Young’ns kick o the third week of performanc­es with a show on Friday, Oct. 20.

Murphy has played with blues legends such as Otis Rush, Johnny Copeland, Pinetop Perkins and Johnny Sansone, and thrills audiences with his unique blues style and skill.

Performing with guests Curtis Matheson and John Main, the show starts at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $30.

Returning once again to the Marigold is Jimmy the Janitor on Saturday, Oct. 21.

As one of Canada’s most popular comedy characters, Jimmy has appeared on CBC radio and television, and has released 11 comedy albums.

His show is full of clean comedy for anyone over 14, and will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are $30.

Wrapping up the month for the Marigold is Coco Love Alcorn, a Canadian pop and jazz singer who has opened for acts such as Burton Cummings, Jesse Cook and Ani DiFranco.

As part of her ‘Invitation to Sing’ tour, Alcorn is bringing her unique blend of jazz-infused pop songs across the country, and will take the stage at the Marigold at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29. Tickets are $22.
