Region shines for Hometown Hockey
To the editor,
Truro was recently the envy of Nova Scotians and the spotlight for hockey fans across Canada as Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour made its one and only Nova Scotia stop, during a 24-city nationwide tour, this past weekend.
The community graciously welcomed the convoy of trucks and more than 50 staff, transforming the downtown civic square to celebrate and acknowledge the region’s robust hockey history. The celebration was proudly received by the community.
The local minor hockey organizations in Debert, Brookfield, Tatamagouche and Truro participated in organized ball hockey games, attended the Truro Jr A Bearcat 20th anniversary game, met retired NHL players and participated in a variety of other activities, while many of the parents volunteered their time to support the Rogers’ team to deliver the experience.
The event drew many locals and non-residents to the downtown area to the delight of the area’s businesses who acknowledged vibrant consumer traffic. The Sunday evening broadcast of the area to the nation was truly inspiring. Recognition of the contributions of First Nations peoples and African Nova Scotians to the game of hockey was moving.
The panoramic views of the area complemented by clips of local attractions, interviews and stories of local hockey heritage, delivered an inviting and warm feel.
On behalf of the Truro & Colchester Chamber of Commerce and its 425 member businesses, we extend our compliments and gratitude to the Town of Truro for inviting Rogers Hometown Hockey to our community.
Thank you, as well, to the many volunteers who helped support the Rogers staff, and to the citizens of Truro and Colchester for being so welcoming, embracing the experience while presenting the beauty and character of the area to the nation.
