U18 curling championships wrap up today
The Nova Scotia U18 championships event, hosted by the Truro Curling Club, is slated to wrap up today.
There were 26 teams – 15 men’s and 11 women’s – competing for the right to represent Nova Scotia at the National Under 18 Curling Championships taking place in St. Andrew’s, N.B., in April.
Following Sunday’s 2 p. m. draw, four teams remained in contention for each of the men’s and women’s divisions.
In men’s, the first semi-final game had Team Weagle, out of the Chester Curling Club, defeating Team Young, from the Mayflower Curling Club, in an extra end, winning 7-6. With this win, Team Weagle earned a spot in Monday afternoon’s championship final.
Both teams were slated to play again Sunday. Team Weagle was taking on Team Abraham (Mayflower Curling Club) while Team Young faced Team Gray (Mayflower Curling Club). The winners of these two games will play Monday morning with the victor advancing to the championship final, Monday afternoon, against Team Weagle.
In the women’s division, Team Ladouceur ( Lakeshore Curling Club) defeated Team Moore (CFB Halifax Curling Club), in an extra end, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon, to earn a place in Monday
afternoon’s championship final.
Later Sunday, Moore was playing Team Nodding (Bridgewater Curling Club) while Team Ladouceur was to play Team Carson (Windsor Curling Club). The winners of these two games will play this morning with the victor advancing to the Championship final, Monday afternoon, against
Team Ladouceur.
Being a double-knockout format, in both divisions, it is possible for a team to earn both tickets to the finals. If that were to happen, Monday’s final game, scheduled for 2 p.m., will not have to be played, and that team will be crowned champion.
