- BY JOEY SMITH

A weekend of competition and camaraderie is on tap for the Truro Curling Club, as the Bible Hill Fire Brigade prepares to host the three-day, 14-team Maritime Firefighters Association championship.

The Truro Curling Club will host another major event this weekend when firefighters gather in the Hubtown for the Maritime Firefighters Association championship.

Fourteen teams will compete in the tournament, which is being hosted by the Bible Hill Fire Brigade from Friday to Sunday.

“It’s basically a gathering of firefighters for a fun spiel,” said Dwane Mellish, of the host committee. “We enjoy seeing the people that we see annually who come to this, plus some new faces as well.”

Each team will play five, six-end games in the preliminary round. Action begins Friday at 8:30 a.m. and playoffs are scheduled for Sunday at 8:30 a.m., followed by championship games at 11: 30 a.m.

Social gatherings will be held at the Bible Hill fire hall on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Six Colchester County teams will compete, including rinks skipped by Walter Mcelhinney and Leo Morrow (Onslow-belmont); Ron Logan (Bible Hill); Al Sutherland (Truro); Kelly Terry (North River) and Dwayne Green (Salmon River). The championship features seven other Nova Scotia teams and one from Sackville, N.B., providing a large economic benefit to the community.

Mellish, along with other host committee members Scott Macdonald and Eric Johnson, answered the call to host the championship on short notice.

“If we hadn’t done it, there was a chance it may not have happened,” Mellish said. “And once you miss a year it may not happen again.”

The host committee expressed its gratitude to the Truro Curling Club and sponsors Municipality of the County of Colchester and Superstore.

It will be the third major championship hosted by the club this season.

The provincial U18 boys and girls event was held in early March and the Nova Scotia firefighters championship was played in Truro in February.
