Age takes a toll with hallowed sports facility

-

Signs of age have been showing for some time at the TAAC Grounds, and it was the winter’s high winds that forced the facility to be closed down.

Light standards, installed in the 1990s, showed indications of being unstable. During the first week of April, the pole behind the third base dugout was deemed most threatening, meaning the grounds couldn’t be used.

“It had to be officially closed because of safety reasons,” said Brian Wood, president of the TAAC Revitalization Project.

However, work done on Tuesday should determine if the grounds can reopen to the public.

Ashley Simms, director of Parks, Recreation and Culture with Truro, said she expects to hear back on an assessment today. If there are no safety issues, the public will be able to access the grounds again.

There are currently 11 light standards, but once completed the project calls for just four, outfitted with LED lighting. Because replacing them is expensive, it’s hoped adjustments to the current lighting system will be sufficient for now.

The Truro Amateur Athletic Club was developed during the 1890s. It has hosted cricket, lacrosse, football, baseball, rugby, tennis, quoits, lawn bowling, cycling, and track and field.

Lighting was added in the early 1990s. The goal of the TAAC Revitalization Project is to upgrade facilities to provide baseball, soccer, lacrosse, football, and track and field, and enhance the capabilities of hosting major events.
