Grounds for family support

Wilsons pitch in to help TAAC project

The Wilson family has close ties to this area’s sporting community and they want to see others enjoy opportunities that first-rate facilities can provide.

The home heating service company recently made a $50,000 donation to the Truro Amateur Athletic Club (TAAC) Grounds Revitalization Project.

“This is something that’s very close to my heart,” said Leslie Wilson, who presented the cheque on behalf of Wilsons. “I was involved in track and field here before going on to university, and my father played rugby here.

“There’s been no real change to facilities since I competed here, and with all the great things going on in the area, this should be kept in high standing.

“We like to give back to the community and this seemed like a good project.”

A three-year fundraising campaign is underway, with a goal to raise $6 million – $2 million from corporate sponsorships, $2 million from government/ sport grants, and $2 million from the community.

As part of the revitalization effort, a new baseball field is to be built elsewhere in the community. Work is planned to begin on that facility once the first million is raised. This would allow the infield of a track at the TC Grounds to be devoted to other team sports, including football and soccer.

“The donation from Wilsons is our biggest gift, to date, but every dollar counts,” said Brian Wood, president of the TAAC Revitalization Project. “We hope other companies and individuals will step forward now.”

The donation gives Wilsons permanent naming rights and signage at the track. There are other opportunities for businesses to name areas of the grounds and provide equipment. Gifts of more than $50 are eligible for a charitable donation tax receipt.
