Truro church donates land for outdoor playspace

St. Andrew’s United Church will soon be the backdrop for outdoor fun and games, thanks to a donation made to the Making Friends Preschool.

During a recent church committee meeting, it was decided the preschool could put up a fence on the front lawn of the church, at the corner of King and Duke streets, and use it as a playspace.

e preschool, situated in the lower level of the church, has been operating for 23 years without a permanent outdoor space to make use of.

“We could take the kids for long walks to nd other playgrounds or parks but now we have our own place,” said preschool owner Ellen Butts. “The kids are just thrilled.”

Butts didn’t ask for the land out of respect to the church, but was pleasantly surprised when the committee contacted her.

“ ey believe in the children and that they are the future. ey believe it should be a community and that it should be a shared space,” she said.

is isn’t the rst time members of the church have gone out of their way to help the preschool, either.

e church carpenter recently built a loft in the preschool for the children to play on and he is now creating a change table for them.

“He’s really good, I really like his work and trust him; if we need something he’s there,” said Butts.

e playspace is awaiting nal approval from Eastern Fence and Early Childhood Development services, after which the children of Making Friends Preschool can enjoy it, complete with a paint easel, soccer nets and a sandbox.

“It’s a very welcoming church. It’s like having the world’s best landlords,” said Butts.
