Selects chasing national title
Colchester County girls competing at Esso Cup Canadian championship
A trio of Colchester County players will compete for a national female hockey title next week.
Bible Hill’s Maddie Quinn and Masstown residents Lindsey Smith and Lily Currie are members of the Northern AAA Subway Selects, who will play at the Esso Cup midget championship, beginning Sunday in Bridgewater. Quinn is a forward, Smith is a defenceman and Currie is a goaltender.
The Selects earned the right to represent Atlantic Canada by winning the provincial crown, followed by a sweep of the Atlantic championships in St. John’s, N.L., in early April.
The Selects have been working hard with three practices per week over the past two weeks and had an opportunity to work out with the St. Francis Xavier University women’s hockey team.
“We had some spirited workouts this week and with one more practice to go, I think the girls are ready to get at it,” said coach Troy Reid.
The Selects hit the ice again on Friday for their final practice before boarding a bus on Saturday bound for the south shore.
All games will be broadcast live on the Hockey Canada website with the final going live on TSN on Saturday, April 28.
On Sunday, the Selects open the tournament against host Metro Boston Pizza at 7 p.m. On Monday, the Selects meet Ontario champion Brampton Canadettes at 3 p.m., followed by a Tuesday game at noon against the Quebec representatives. On Wednesday, the Atlantic champs face defending champion St. Albert, Alta., at noon before their final preliminary game against Saskatoon Stars at 3 p.m.
The Selects will need at least two preliminary to advance to the medal round, and Reid is optimistic his club can achieve that.
“We had a great season and I think our girls feel as though the mission is not complete. They worked hard to get where they are and I think we will be competitive throughout the tourney. It’s certainly the best teams in Canada and this will give us the chance to see where we fit among the best. We’re excited and humbled to be part of this marquee event and I know the girls are excited and prepared.”
