Truro woman’s candles a hot commodity
When Kelsey Weir bought candle-making equipment through a Kijiji ad, she was thinking about a fun hobby.
Today, Weir operates Foxhound Collection, making scented soy candles that are sold across Canada.
“When I started making candles I fell in love with it,” she said. “I love the repetitive, monotonous part and I like the creative part, blending the scents. It’s the best of both worlds.”
Her candle sales started by accident. After she posted some candle photos online, a shop in Halifax contacted her and asked about selling them.
“I was making them out of my kitchen at home rst,” said Weir. “I’d have wax melting in pots on the stove.”
She moved to a downtown location but was in a basement at rst. In August 2017, she moved into studio space at 802 Prince Street, which is shared with Rolling Sea Tattooery.
Foxhound candles are soybased, and include essential oil and synthetic blends. Weir ensures none of her suppliers test on animals, and all ingredients are vegan.
“I like soy because it’s totally plant-based, water soluble, not greasy, and produces less soot,” she said.
Soy also burns at a lower temperature, making candles last longer.
e rst candles she made to sell were lavender + linen, and it’s still one of the best sellers.
She currently o ers 14 scents including grapefruit + g; patchouli+ mint; clementine; Earl Grey; apple bourbon; black tea + spice; and wild honey + rose.
