- HEALTH CARE TRURO, N.S. BY HARRY SULLIVAN TRURO DAILY NEWS

A Truro doctor who initiated a community based walking program has been recognized for “exemplary achievement” by his peers.

Dr. Stephen Ellis was honoured with the Physician Health Promotion Award last weekend in Sydney during the annual conference of Doctors

Nova Scotia.

In 2016, as a way to improve the health and wellness of people in his community, Ellis helped launch the first Atlantic Canadian chapter of Walk with a Doc, a grassroots walking program where family doctors facilitate free weekly walks with their patients and members of the public. The walks are held each Saturday morning at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre.

“My greatest career accomplishment is being able to continue doing the varied career I set out to do,” he said, in a news release.

Ellis, who has been practicing medicine for 23 years, has worked as a family doctor in Truro for 19 years. He has also worked as a flight surgeon with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Ellis also provides care at chronic pain clinics in Truro and New Glasgow and helps train medical students and family medicine residents at Dalhousie University.

Ellis was one of nine physicians in the province to receive special honours during the conference.

Dr. Tim Holland, who works out of the Colchester East Hants Health Centre was elected as this year’s president of Doctors Nova Scotia.
