Truro Junior High ‘adopted’ by Indigo Indigo Love of Reading Foundation supplies schools with new books

- BY FRAM DINSHAW

Students at Truro Junior High will soon have new books and other educational supplies after their school was ‘adopted’ by a major bookstore chain.

The Truro Mall’s Coles Bookstore will raise funds for the school during the three- week Adopt a School program run by the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. Books and other learning items are presently in short supply at Truro Junior High.

“We believe that the right book at the right moment can change a child’s life forever,” said Ariel Siller, executive director of the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation. “Yet too many children in high-needs elementary schools have limited access to books due to insufficient funding. All children deserve access to compelling books that can inspire them to fall in love with reading and to become engaged learners.”

Running through Oct. 7, the campaign will unite 190 Canadian high-needs schools with local Indigo, Chapters and Coles stores in their communities to raise funds for new books and resources. The goal is to add one book for every child to their often aging and outdated library selections. Canadians can also donate online to support more than 400 additional participating schools.

All participating schools have their own page included with the online fundraising platform, adoptaschool. indigo. ca. Those wishing to support a high-needs school can donate directly to the participating school of their choice.

The online platform also lets people support a local school with no donation needed. When supporters share a story on a school’s online page, the foundation will donate a book to the selected school, up to 20 books for each school. In addition, online users can ‘heart’ these stories and the top five most ‘hearted’ stories in each province will win addi- tional funds.

A select number of schools will also be adopted by an Indigo, Chapters, or Coles store and will receive all the donations made at that store during the program.

All participating schools benefit from a 30 per cent discount off books at Indigo when using program donations.
