More than a ton of food collected through Truro Mall food drive
For a while, it looked pretty bare inside the food collection wagon at the Truro Mall. en the donations started pouring in.
e mall had a tractor and wagon, provided by Green Diamond Equipment, set up near the food court. e campaign was called the Big Truro Mall Give, and the goal was to collect 1,000 pounds of food to deliver to the Colchester Food Bank before anksgiving.
“Last week we had 25 pounds of food,” said Leslay Harris, senior property administrator with the mall on ursday. “It looked pretty empty.”
en word spread, and contractors and businesses began challenging each other to give. When it was time head to the food bank, on Oct. 4, a tractor with a bucket in front was also brought in for the task.
Donations were weighed at the food bank, and the total came to 3,540 pounds.
“We try to incorporate something to give back with everything we do, so we’re really happy with this,” said Harris. “People have been very generous.”
e mall had committed $1 – to a maximum total of $1,000 – for every pound of food donated, and the $1,000 cheque was also presented.
“ is is just amazing,” said food bank lead coordinator Darlene Deadder. “We were very low on canned goods so this was really needed. It will ensure a lot of people enjoy a anksgiving dinner. e monetary donation will allow us to buy any of the things that are still needed.”
Because the food bank only has a small scale, it took about an hour to do the weighing. An in- oor scale would allow them to do the job much faster, and they’re hoping there is an unneeded one that someone is willing to donate.
e food bank’s new building, at 580 Prince St., is taking shape and a move is expected this fall.
