Bearcats win pair at Showcase event

Myles Hektor made 22 saves and the Truro Bearcats edged the St. Stephen Aces 2- 1 on Tuesday at the Maritime Junior Hockey League Showcase event in New Glasgow.

Karter Renouf scored the winning goal at 17: 49 of the second period. Kyle Sexton, on a power play, also scored for Truro. Brandon Costa had the lone St. Stephen goal.

It was the second Showcase win for the Bearcats, coming after a 3-1 victory over Miramichi on Monday.

Dylan Burton, Kyle Sexton ( PP) and Luke Macmillan netted Truro markers and Hektor made 31 saves.

Charles-andre Cypihot scored for the Timberwolv­es.

The Showcase featured 12 games played over two days, pitting Eastlink North Division teams against those from the Eastlink South.

In action last week, the Bearcats blanked the Pictou County Crushers 3- 0. Sexton, Jack Mcgovern ( PP) and Renouf scored goals for the Bearcats and Hektor stopped 30 shots for the shutout.

In another game, Bearcats blew a late third-period lead and fell 4-3 to the Yarmouth Mariners.

Truro led 3- 2 before Brett Crossley – with his second of the contest – scored for Yarmouth with 2: 20 left in the third to tie it.

Matt Barron fired the winner for the Mariners two minutes later to cap the comeback.

Mcgovern, Gavin Hart ( SH) and Will Mizuik had markers for the Bearcats, while Matthew Boring had the other goal for the Mariners.

Bearcats goaltender Alec Macdonald made 28 saves in the loss.

The Bearcats ( 6- 3- 0- 0) host the Edmundston Blizzard on Friday for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
