Millbrook store owner faces charges

The owner of a Millbrook business has been charged by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) for failing to pay taxes totaling more than $2 million.

Lisa L. Marshall, who operates the Traditional Trading Post convenience store, is charged with willfully evading or attempting to evade compliance with the Excise Tax Act.

A news release from the CRA said its investigation revealed Marshall failed to collect or remit Goods and Services Tax/harmonized Sales Tax (GST/HST) totaling $2,284,144.72 on sales of tobacco to non-natives between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2015.

If convicted, registrants who fail to remit GST/HST owing to the government are liable not only for payment of the full amount of GST/HST owing, but also to penalties and interest. A conviction for tax evasion could also result in a ne of up to 200 per cent of the tax evaded and a jail term of up to ve years.

e CRA said anyone who has made an omission in their dealings with the agency, has made a tax mistake or left out details on their tax return, could be given a second chance to correct the information and avoid criminal prosecution.
