CEC teams do well at tourney

e CEC Girls volleyball teams both had strong showings at the Mcdonald’s Golden Arches Invitation­al Tournament in Antigonish this past weekend.

e Varsity Girls nished rst, winning all of their matches in straight sets and defeating the West Kings Wolverines 25-15, 25-16 in the nals. e JV Cougars nished in third place with a 2519, 25-16 win over SAERC in the bronze medal match. is is the eighth consecutiv­e year the Cougars have won this tournament.

e Cougars nished rst in their round robin pool with straight set wins over Sir John A, West Kings, SAERC, and Sydney Academy. ey defeated Hants East in the quarter nals and the JV Cougars in the semi nals to advance to the nals against West Kings.

In round robin play, the CEC Junior Varsity Team defeated the host J. H. Gillis Royals in three sets, Hants East two straight, and lost two straight to Riverview to nish second in their pool. In the quarter nals they dropped the rst set to Sir John A. Macdonald High School from Tantallon by a score of 12-25. ey clawed their way back into the match winning the second set 25-13 and went on to win in three sets. ey started strong against CEC Varsity and were tied at 10 be- fore several strong service runs allowed the Team 1 Cougars to take control of that match. Leading the Varsity Cougars’ attack was Maddy Ball with 32 kills followed by Emma Fortunato with 27 kills and Hannah Huntley with 20. Fortunato led the team in attack percentage with 48.8 per cent. Macailin Tanner had 18 kills and only one hitting error for a 44.7-per-cent attack percentage.

Mariah Putnam was top server with 25 aces and 69 successful serves for a 3.43 serving average. Caitlin Whooten had 17 aces and 53 successful serves for a 3.27 serving average while Maddie Greatorex had 12 aces and only two serving errors for a 3.26 serving average. Sydney Davidson led the JV Cougars’ attack with 35 kills followed by Molly Marquis with 20 kills. Davidson was also the top server with 23 aces and 59 successful serves for a 3.05 serving average. Marlee Mcquillan had 18 aces and 43 successful serves for a 3.40 serving average. Sarah Garrett led the team in serve receive with 13 perfect passes and a 2.59 serve receive average while Sydney Davidson had 15 perfect passes and a 2.34 serve receive average.

is coming weekend both CEC teams will travel to Cape Breton to compete in the Sydney Academy Invitation­al Tournament.
