Musical get-together warms the holidays

- BY LYNN CURWIN

There will be a cosy musical get-together in Truro between Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

A Very Merry New Year will be staged at the Marigold Cultural Centre Dec. 28 at 7:30 p.m.

“There’s not a lot going on be- tween Christmas and the New Year celebrations, so we thought, why not do a show and make it a benefit for the Spotlight Musical Theatre program,” said Andrew Morrisey, who will be the host for the evening of music and stories.

“Margot Bégin has written a really great script based on the old-style holiday specials where friends come to visit and we sit around the piano and share music.”

Bégin is directing and Rachel O’brien is the musical director for the show, which will also include Emma Maceachern, Adam Smith, Erin Brocklehurst, Jay Mosher, Cian Mccarron, Dane Steward, Megan Brocklehurst, Zac Ellis, and Gregory Jackson.

“The cast is mostly alumni from Spotlight, and they’ve gone on to do incredible things in theatre,” said Morrisey. “I didn’t act in Spotlight but Margot hired me to be a vocal coach with the program.”

Those taking part are coming from various areas; Morrisey has been acting in theatre in Montreal since October. They’ve been sent copies of the script and will be prepared when they begin rehearsals at the Marigold on Dec. 26.

“It includes a mixture of songs, some holiday ones and some hits from past Spotlight shows,” added Morrisey. “It’s a great way to keep the festive spirit going.”

A Very Merry New Year is a pay-what-you-can event.
